1) Self-Esteem
Tawonga encourages positive growth and self reliance in a nurturing environment. Every child feels special at Tawonga, because every child is special at Tawonga.
At camp, this means we train staff that our community is kid-focused, and that at Tawonga, the children always come first. It also means that counselors as well as all other staff are trained to focus on the needs of the individual child, to know kids and to love all of them for their unique talents and qualities.

2) Community
Living and playing together while sharing community responsibility gives campers skills and insight which they bring home, and bring to all of their future life experiences.
At camp, this means we work together, all taking responsibility for our shared space, reaching consensus decisions, and learning to live with others. It also means that Tawonga counselors are kid specialists, with no secondary responsibilities outside their bunks, and are empowered to prioritize the quality of the group dynamic over any activity. |

3) Nature & Environment
Tawonga is a literal breath of fresh air. Through exploration of the rivers, lakes, trails, valleys and mountain tops of Tawonga’s Sierra Mountain setting, campers learn to love and respect the natural world.
At camp, this means we have discussions on the grass, under the trees, and sometimes under the visible Milky Way and thousands of stars. It also means that in the back country with experienced Wilderness Leaders, campers get real exposure to the outdoors. |

4) Spirituality and a positive Jewish identity
Judaism is infused into daily life at camp. Through Tawonga’s focus on community and celebration, campers discover their own identity, questions, answers and spiritual selves.
At Camp, this means we sing, celebrate, and learn together, but are encouraged to individually reflect on the Jewish community created at Tawonga. It also means that you haven’t really seen it all until you’ve been to a Tawonga Torah Service.
