Tawonga Bar & Bat Mitzvah training now offered locally during the school year!
March 14, 2016
Children who have connected to Judaism and the Jewish community as campers at Tawonga may now take that amazing leap into adulthood — their Bar or Bat Mitzvah — by joining our brand-new B’nai Mitzvah program. This is a two-year blend of classes, retreats and experiential learning offered during the school year, at locations near you!
Tawonga Bar and Bat Mitzvah training will take place largely outdoors; and a Tawonga Bar or Bat Mitzvah is less about standing and more about moving: moving toward heritage; moving toward community; and moving toward becoming strong, happy, healthy adults.
If you like the idea of children traversing this important life juncture led by Tawonga staff, embodying Tawonga values of nature, community and joyous Judaism, keep reading.
Bar & Bat Mitzvah Program Program
Why is Tawonga taking on this serious responsibility of guiding children into young adulthood, teaching Hebrew blessings and building intentional community? For hundreds of our campers, Tawonga is their primary place of connection to Judaism and the Jewish community. This may be because their parents are interfaith, or the cost of multiple affiliations is too great, or they just like the inclusive, unique way Tawonga approaches Judaism. Whatever the reason, more and more parents have been asking us to offer this training, and we are so happy to be able to say, “Yes!”
The first classes will begin in fall 2016 for rising 6th graders in San Francisco, the East Bay and the South Peninsula (grade exceptions can be made for 5th and 7th graders). You may register here.
You can learn more about B’nai Mitzvah here, or reach program coordinator Lauren Parker at (415) 543-2267 or at [email protected]. You can also join our upcoming B’nai Mitzvah Parent Information Sessions in San Francisco, the East Bay or the South Peninsula. Tawonga’s Bar & Bat Mitzvah program is just the beginning of a broader vision we have developed to share more of Camp Tawonga with our ever-growing community, through year-round, lifelong opportunities for everyone to enjoy. Our summer sessions will always be the core of our programming, and our vision for Tawonga will bring the same energy, intimacy and purpose we cultivate at Camp to a broader scale, inviting people of all ages to explore and find community with us. As our programs continue to expand in scope and reach, we look forward to sharing more developments with you that will hopefully benefit you, your family and every Tawongan.
