The Music of Camp Tawonga

Music is a key feature of Camp Tawonga and is incredibly present in the daily experience for campers. After every breakfast and dinner there is a spirited song session in the Dining Hall. After Shabbat dinner we have freylach, an epic song session featuring a mix of Jewish/Israeli music, folk rock and pop tunes. During the day, song leaders lead blocks with bunks ranging from songwriting to serenading to “band for a block”. Needless to say, we love music here at Camp.

We see music as central to Tawonga’s Mission in that it fosters not only a strong sense of self by allowing kids to let loose and be creative, but also by building a bonded community. There is nothing quite like song session, where everyone comes together, singing tunes at the top of their lungs and laughing and dancing as one big family. It is truly a sight to see.
