Tawonga’s Shabbat Essence
This summer’s Jewish programming themes are pride and awe, and this weekend’s Shabbat was filled with both!
Since our last update, campers have soaked up a joyful weekend full of Tawonga magic. On Friday evening, the Camp community welcomed Shabbat with a musical stroll through Camp. The evening continued with a lively freilach (special song session), where campers and staff sang, danced, and celebrated as the sky turned shades of gold and pink.
For many campers, Shabbat at Tawonga is about more than traditions – it’s a feeling that extends throughout the entire week.
Gathered in a circle reflecting on their time at Camp, campers from G-7 shared that Tawonga itself carries a special Shabbat essence: a sense of rest, connection, and separation from the pressures of everyday life.
“At camp, all the bad things from the outside world just stop,” said Priya G. “You hit pause.”
That feeling of stepping away from everyday worries resonated throughout the weekend. Saturday brought a meaningful Torah service, refreshing time in the water, and a classic BBQ dinner enjoyed under the longest day of the year, the summer solstice.
“It’s a refreshing break,” said Dorthea H.
For Evy M., the magic of Camp comes from the unique community that forms here each summer.
“We’re in such a strong bubble with a very strong sense of community that’s not found in many other places,” Evy said. “Being at camp is so magical, and it’s so good for your self-esteem.”
Sometimes, campers shared, the most meaningful moments aren’t the big events at all.
“It’s kind of funny,” said Dover W. “I realized recently how my favorite parts at camp are not even when we’re doing an activity. It’s quiet time when we’re all just hanging out or going on a walk as a cabin.”
Today, the SCITs embarked on an exciting adventure along the Tuolumne River, and Galil campers headed out on a backpacking trip while the rest of Camp enjoyed a slower-paced Sunday.
As another week begins, campers are carrying forward the joy, connection, and sense of belonging that make Tawonga feel a little like Shabbat every day of the week.
Shavua tov – Have a good week!
