Building Skills at Camp

During Session III, campers have the opportunity to learn new skills and build on their current interests in the form of “Livnot” and”Chugim,” elective classes led by counselors and specialists. Over the course of five activity blocks during the session, campers dive in and immerse themselves in the topic of their choice. For the Units of Carmel and Galil, these groups are called Chugim, and the Units of Eilat, Haifa and Chalutz participate in Livnot.

Chugim, which translates to “lesson” and livnot, which means “to build”, can focus on anything. From fermentation and kombucha making, to studying the natural history of Camp or even freestyle rapping and spoken word poetry, campers have a wide array of options to choose from, catered to their own personalities and interests.

For example, popular chugim and livnot include fairy-house building, screen printing, zine-making, songwriting and soccer philosophy.

Goats and Garden Art Chugim met today at Arts & Crafts to paint signs for the goat areas in the Farm, inscribing messages like “Trespassers will be composted” and “Don’t Panic, It’s Organic!” They shared the space with the screenprinting chugim and a drawing chugim. The Ball is Life chugim dominated the basketball courts while Soccer Philosophy posed deep questions on the field.

Chugims and Livnots will meet twice more before the end of the session for campers to complete projects they have been working on, or to wrap up and solidify any skill they are learning during these times.
